Salt Harvesting Tradition
Lac Rose is one of the saltiest lakes in the world, with salt concentrations reaching up to 40% in some areas
This makes it possible to float effortlessly, similar to the Dead Sea.
Salt harvesting is a vital part of the local economy:
- Up to 3,000 workers, including many women, collect salt daily.
- They use traditional methods, wading into the lake and scooping salt by hand or with wooden tools.
- To protect their skin from the harsh salt, workers apply shea butter (beurre de Karité).
- Around 38,000 tonnes of salt are harvested annually, used locally and exported
